HayPost and DHL Confirm Letters Cannot Be Sent from Armenia to Azerbaijan
Neither Armenia’s national postal operator, HayPost, nor international express delivery service DHL currently offers the possibility of sending letters or parcels from Armenia to Azerbaijan, according to information obtained by Sputnik Armenia.
The issue arose after Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan suggested on October 15 that letters collected for Armenian prisoners held in Baku should be sent directly through postal services rather than handed over to the Armenian government.
On October 1, Artak Beglaryan, head of the Artsakh Union NGO, former State Minister and former Human Rights Defender of Artsakh, handed over 1,254 letters addressed to Armenian detainees in Azerbaijan to the Armenian government. The letters had been written by people from different countries around the world and collected through an initiative launched by Veronika Zonabend, wife of imprisoned Armenian philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan.
Following the Prime Minister’s remarks, Sputnik Armenia contacted HayPost and DHL to determine whether letters could actually be sent from Armenia to Baku.
Both companies confirmed that such services are currently unavailable.
A HayPost operator told the journalist, who contacted the company as an ordinary customer, that sending letters or parcels to Azerbaijan was not possible because the relevant postal services were not available.
DHL representatives provided the same response, confirming that the company could not transport letters or parcels from Armenia to Azerbaijan.
Sputnik Armenia subsequently received an official response from HayPost confirming that postal services from Armenia to Azerbaijan are unavailable and that the company had never previously offered such services.
When asked whether letters or parcels could be delivered through third countries, HayPost suggested submitting a formal written inquiry.
The findings raise practical questions about how the 1,254 letters collected for Armenian prisoners in Baku can be delivered to their intended recipients, given the absence of direct postal services between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
