Ombudsman Visits Ruben Vardanyan

On March 21, Azerbaijan’s Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva visited Ruben Vardanyan in detention. The parties discussed humanitarian issues, as well as the right of Ruben and all Armenian prisoners to receive the full text of their verdict in a language they understand. It remains unclear whether she has visited other Armenian prisoners.

The visit came after Ruben had unsuccessfully attempted for ten days to reach the Ombudsperson – through his lawyer, written requests, and phone calls. On March 3, during a phone call with his family, he was compelled to address Sabina Aliyeva publicly; however, the call was forcibly cut off.
