There is no Statement, no “case” against Ruben Vardanyan. There is no crime, no trial, no verdict, no law, no nothing.

Only age-old tyranny, despotism, imprisonment and, finally, suffering, sadness, unfairness and death. Death of the accused, death of their family, friends, supporters, and admirers of their victims of their endless generosity and fruitless love.

The old, old story of inequality, mercilessness and the endless evil of impunity.

What would instead be the just “verdict” of a better world? Sovereign clemency? Prison exchange? Profound apology from the jailer to the jailed? Money damages to the family, friends, etc? Gestures, scarred lives, irrecoverably wasted time? rue? rage? Regret?

No. None of the above. All repellently inadequate response for the inflicted crimes.

Neither the Old Testament nor the New Testament provide even a remotely adequate reply.

So, to my long admired friend, brother, colleague, exemplar of endless love, generosity and, I can shamefacedly suggest only the bitter reward of martyrdom to a humanity still unable to deploy an intelligence commensurate with its endless potential for evil, while vainly awaiting the mysterious and untraceable blessing of cruel and random fortune, the Demon Rectifier of Blind Luck.

Wishing him all possible strength of his magnificent endurance of the unendurable in reply to the inflictors of unearned and undeserved power and wealth.

To my long, long admired and beloved friend, Ruben Vardanyan, the Heroic, Powerful and never to be forgotten standard-bearer for the Humanity of us all,

R. Freeman
